Bio & CV
Judite dos Santos was born in Porto, Portugal and was raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, lives and works in New York City. She received a BFA in painting from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, in 1984 and an MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, NB, NJ, in 1986. She was a studio fellow at the Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program-NYC, in 1984 and the P.S.1 Program at the Clocktower-NYC in 1987. Judite continues her research in philosophy, critical theory and cultural studies. Parallel to her visual arts projects, language/writing is very important and she has designed and published a number of small books and spreads, integrating her images and texts.
Judite is a neo-conceptual interdisciplinary artist since she begun her practice and she has developed unique/particular structures and means of expression while remaining unconstrained by any one tradition. She has used 3dimensional objects as well as paintings, drawings and photographic images as multiples, often utilizing the grid as metaphor to create narrative structures. Architectural space, site specificity and context have been central to her pieces, having time, space, physical materials, process and multiple elements integrated as concept. Judite has been awarded grants from NYFA; NJSCA; NEA-Mid Atlantic; Pollock/Krasner Foundation in the USA and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal, among others. She has exhibited her work since 1984 in the USA and abroad, including the Whitney Museum; the New Museum of Contemporary Art; the Bronx Museum; PS1-MoMA; the Electronic Board at Times Square through the Public Art Fund in NYC. She has also exhibited work at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon; the Centro Portugues de Fotografia in Porto; Museu da Fotografia in Braga; CAV Centro de Artes Visuais, Coimbra, Portugal; Frieze Art Fair in London, UK and Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast, Northern Ireland. 1989-2020 Judite taught at various universities in New York City and abroad.
